We would like to Dedicate this years’ Turn-a-thon to Bill Oliver

Bill has been a driving force in the Freedom Pen Project since it began in early  2004.  He is a long-time member of the Hunt County Woodturners.  Most members of his club as well as a lot of other turners in the Metroplex area go to Bill for help with woodturning projects.  Although he has a vast amount of knowledge he is patient and willing to help beginners.  His belief that knowledge is to be shared has made him special to many of us.

What is a Freedom Pen Turn-A-Thon?

This is where woodturners (those who are just interested in woodturning to experts) get together for the day and turn and finish pens. These handcrafted writing instruments are then collected by a national organization and distributed free of charge to our troops overseas (mostly those in Iraq and Afghanistan).

Why would I want to participate? The troops love receiving hand made items from home. As one soldier wrote: What makes these pens special is that it wasn’t just opening your wallet. I know someone took time out of their day and made this by hand for me.One does not have to support the war to support the troops.

Do I have to be a turner to participate? NO !!! Virtually any one can participate. I started my daughter turning when she was 10 years old and I have taught some 7 & 8 year olds to turn. There will be plenty of people here who will gladly instruct and help you turn your first pen.

What Do I need to bring? If you have a mini lathe & tools bring them. If not, there will be plenty of lathes here as well as people who are willing and able to instruct you.

What does it cost to participate? Nothing. Everything is paid for all we ask is that the pens you turn will go to the troops.
